Seminar: “Music, art and performance for community activation”

How do music, the arts and performative practices contribute to activating participatory, relational and symbolic processes within local communities?

In the sixth seminar of the Building Community series, curated by the P.L.A.C.E. Research Laboratory as part of the 2025–2026 programme of the School of Performing Arts and Community Care, we will reflect on:

  • how musical, artistic and performative practices contribute to community activation through forms of situated participation, collective expression and the building of social bonds;
  • which theoretical, pedagogical and design approaches guide the transmission, mediation and sustainability of artistic practices in community contexts;
  • how communities interpret, share and rework artistic and performative experiences as devices for narration, recognition and the production of territorial meaning;
  • the role of the arts, cultural projects and institutions in promoting processes of care, inclusion and community empowerment, with particular attention to tangible and intangible cultural heritage.

Speakers:

  • Andrea Gargiulo – Lecturer in Choral Training, “N. Piccinni” Conservatory of Bari; Artistic Director of the MusicaInGioco project
  • Luigi Mengoli – Musician and ethnomusicologist, “Pietro Sassu” Ethnographic and Musical Archive, Spongano
  • Gianni Nuti – Lecturer in General Didactics and Special Pedagogy, University of the Aosta Valley
  • Micla Petrelli – Lecturer in Theory of Perception and Gestalt Psychology, Academy of Fine Arts of Bologna
  • Antonio Damasco – Director of the Italian Network of Popular Culture

The seminar is open to all School participants and the general public.
